California School, Sailboats in San Pedro Harbor

California School, Sailboats in San Pedro Harbor with Gold leaf frame

This painting was created in 1931 or earlier. This 16 x 24 oil on canvas bears a Linder's Art Shop ink-stamped paper label on the top stretcher bar. Artist Harry Linder 1886-1931, who arrived in California in 1917, established a gallery in Long Beach, California where he exhibited the works of local artists. (source: Edan Hughes, Artists in California 1786-1940) Beyond this Harry Linder ink stamp (probably the source of the stretcher bars), this paintings has no other identifying marks.

This skillful painting is in our opinion the work of Sam Hyde Harris, most likely of his favorite locale at San Pedro Harbor in the 1920's. It was sold to us as such. Quite similar paintings have been coming to market, including one that we have that is authenticated by the artist's widow.

The size of the painting, 16" x 24" was no longer standard for early 20th Century works of this type. It is a very successful painting that draws the viewer into the scene and strongly suggests the quiet solitude and atmospheric of the past in that Southern California locale.

The hand carved carved, gilded frame is by Vandeuren Archival Framing in West Hollywood, California.
