This painting was originally priced in 1978 by John W. Hilton at $10,000. But John decided, at his wife's urging, to remove this painting from the market and keep it in the family collection after it had been shown in the 1978 "Desert Painters Exhibit" at the Palm Springs Desert Museum. The painting was done in 1975 just prior to the filling of the Lake Powell Reservoir. The construction of the Glen Canyon Dam was controversial in that the rising water would damage many sacred sites of the Navajo Indians, including Rainbow Bridge. With permission from the Navajo, John at age 71 was able to take the lengthy hike to the Rainbow Bridge site and produce this amazing painting. At the time, he also took a photo of the Rainbow Bridge (see below) which was published in Arizona Highways Magazine, along with a photo of this painting.
