Museo de Arte de Ponce
recently at the Crocker Museum

This month, we feature six centuries of paintings from the Museo de Arte de Ponce, located on Puerto Rico's south shore. This dazzling exhibition just ended a successful run at Sacramento's Crocker Museum, showing the greatest collection of historic European art in the Caribbean.

The exhibition featured an extraordinary array of paintings painted by El Greco, Peter Paul Ruebens, Thomas Gainsborough, Francisco de Goya, Eugenio Lucas Velázquez, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, William Merritt Chase, Frederic Edwin Church, James Tissot, and John Singer Sargent.

The Museo de Arte de Ponce is home to one of the largest and most important art collections in the Caribbean. Located on Puerto Rico’s southern coast, Ponce, often called the “Pearl of the South," is a historic port city celebrated for its elegant architecture, colorful streets, and lively central plaza. The city lies about an hour and twenty minutes by car from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan.

In January 2020, the museum’s main building suffered significant earthquake damage. Since then, the institution has undergone extensive seismic retrofitting and repairs. During this period, portions of its celebrated collection traveled internationally, allowing audiences elsewhere to experience works that rarely leave Puerto Rico.

Since early February, this remarkable collection has been on view at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.

Below are photographs of paintings included in the exhibition, along with brief observations inspired by the exhibition placards.

Painted between 1520 and 1530, The Descent of the Holy Spirit was the oldest work in the exhibition. Pedro Machuca is believed to have worked in Raphael’s workshop before returning to Spain around 1520. The painting was most likely created as part of a predella, the narrow horizontal base beneath an altarpiece. Even after five centuries, the work still carries the calm balance and clarity associated with the Italian Renaissance.

In Judith with the Head of Holofernes, Judith appears elegantly dressed and composed while presenting the severed head of the Assyrian general she has defeated. Cranach contrasts refinement with brutality, turning the biblical heroine into both a courtly beauty and a symbol of courage and vengeance.
Giovanni Pietro Rizzoli was among Leonardo da Vinci’s most devoted followers. In Saint John the Baptist, the saint gently gestures toward the lamb, symbolizing Christ’s future sacrifice. The soft modeling and quiet spirituality reveal how deeply Leonardo’s influence shaped the artist’s work.

Following the Protestant Reformation, the Council of Trent established new guidelines for religious imagery, encouraging artists to create scenes that were emotionally direct, believable, and spiritually persuasive. Christ at the Column reflects this approach, focusing intensely on Christ’s suffering during his final hours. Morales heightens the emotional power through realism and intimate devotion rather than grand spectacle.

The identity of the woman in Portrait of a Lady with a Pink is unknown. Anthonis Mor was a Court painter for the Spanish Habsburgs. He and other such artists such as Titian and Alonso Sanchez Coello painted portraits for embassies and courts throughout Europe.

Saint Francis of Assisi in Meditation belongs to a series of deeply spiritual images El Greco created of Saint Francis. Here, Francis appears withdrawn into contemplation beside Brother Leo, his friend, secretary, and confessor. The elongated forms and dramatic lighting reflect El Greco’s uniquely mystical style, while the subject itself aligned perfectly with the Catholic Church’s efforts to emphasize humility and devotion during the Counter-Reformation.

Rubens trained in Antwerp before becoming court painter to the governors of the Spanish Netherlands. Head of the Oldest of the Three Kings was painted as part of a larger composition depicting the Three Kings. Rather than idealizing the figure, Rubens emphasizes age, character, and humanity through vigorous brushwork and warm light.

Anthony Van Dyck is primarily known for portraits of the English aristocracy. Saint Andrew is one of his early works, part of a series of portraits of the twelve disciples. At the time, he was an assistant for Peter Paul Ruebens in Antwerp.

During the reign of Emperor Diocletian (244-311) Saint Sebastian was commanding the Praetorian Guard. He was executed for his Christian faith. Giovanni Sebastian was revered as a protector against the plague. Images of him were popular during the epidemics of the 16th century. Francesco Barbieri is known for Italian Baroque paintings full of drama.

The Port of Delft captures the calm elegance of seventeenth-century Dutch life. Quiet waterways, carefully observed architecture, and luminous atmosphere reflect the Dutch Golden Age fascination with commerce, civic pride, and light itself. Like Johannes Vermeer, Daniel Vosamaer belonged to Delft’s Guild of Saint Luke. Although little is known about their personal relationship, they almost certainly moved within the same artistic circles.

St. Jerome Writing shows Jerome translating the Bible into Latin. Jusepe de Ribera shows Jerome neither as triumphant or theatrical. Instead, he is contemplative and vulnerable, typical of the Counter Reformation.

Elisabetta Sirani 1638-1665, Italian
Head of Young Christ 1655
Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico

Head of a Young Christ is typical of images of the Counter Reformation. Elisabetta Sirani presents Christ not as a distant religious icon, but as an intimate and deeply human presence. Rich shadows and lively brushwork give the painting unusual warmth and immediacy. Despite dying at only twenty-seven, Sirani became one of Bologna’s most successful painters, eventually taking over her father’s workshop and attracting prestigious patrons including the Medici family.

Even though Elisabetta Sirani died at the age of 27, she was one of the most successful painters in Bologna. She trained as a painter with her father, Giovanni Andrea Sirani and took over his workshop. She was praised for her draftsman skills and her painting speed.

In the book of Daniel, the story of Susanna and the Elders tells the story of a righteous woman falsely accused of infidelity by two elders who attempt to blackmail her. Nudity was rare in Spanish Baroque paintings. Such paintings belonged to a select group of patrons including King Phillip II and King Phillip IV who kept them in private galleries away from the public.

Spanish Baroque painter Claudio Coello was court painter to King Charles II, the last of the Spanish Habsburgs. He is well known for his skill at blending beauty, tension and as an excellent storyteller.

shows her at the Hall of Mirrors at the Alcazar of Madrid wearing traditional mourning attire. Her husband, King Philip IV had died, and her son Charles II was still a child. Mariana served as Queen Regent for the next ten years. Juan Bautista Martinez del Mazo was a student and son-in-law of Diego Velazquez.

The Judgement of Paris shows Paris, a Trojan prince, tasked to choose the most beautiful among three goddesses. He chose Aphrodite, who in turn promised Paris the love of Helen, the wife of the King of Sparta. Hence began the Trojan War.

After growing up in Italy, Angelica Kauffman moved to London where she built a successful painting career, becoming one of two women founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts.

Thomas Gainsborough was one of Bath's leading artists. Portrait of a Young Lady is of a rural gentry or middle class young woman dressed according to French fashion trends which were popular at the time in England. The flowers placed in the center of the composition symbolizes purity and joy. The unknown sitter is most likely a debutante participating in a social event for the first time. Although Gainsborough is known for his landscapes, he was a prolific portrait painter.

Portrait of the Countess of Châtenois shows the Countess informally glancing over her left shoulder. Elisabeth-Louise Vigée le Brun joined the Academie de Saint-Luc and the French Academy four years later. In 1779, she was commissioned to paint a portrait of Queen Marie Antoinette and was named the official court painter. During the French Revolution Elisabeth-Louise kept her head, fleeing France to Italy. She remained there over a decade, not returning until 1802.

Portrait of Martin Zapater depicts Goya’s lifelong friend Martín Zapater dressed in elegant velvet and silk, his direct gaze conveying intelligence and confidence without aristocratic stiffness. Their decades of correspondence survives, and remains an important sources for understanding Goya’s life and personality. Zapater himself was a wealthy merchant from Aragón with strong Enlightenment-era interests and ideas.

Portrait of the Ecclesiastical Notary José María Ruiz Peña shows a well dressed ecclesiastical scholar. Historical records indicate that Puerto Rico had only three lawyers on the island before 1791. In the last decades of the 18th century and early decades of the 19th century, Jose Campeche was the most sought after portrait painter in San Juan.

Sir John Everett Millais 1829-1896, British
The Escape of a Heretic in 1559, 1857
Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico

The 19th century paintings in this exhibition have real fireworks. The 16th- through 18th-century paintings often focus on religion, royalty, mythology, and polished formal portraits.

But in the 19th century, artists were far more interested in drama, emotion, atmosphere, nature. Painters like Sir John Everett Millais, John Singer Sargent, and Frederic Edwin Church used richer color, looser brushwork, dramatic storytelling, and more naturalistic scenes to create paintings that feel personal, emotional, and modern rather than formal or ceremonial.

The Escape of a Heretic tells a 300 year-old story of a young woman condemned to death by the Spanish Inquisition. Her escape, just minutes before her planned execution, shows her being led down a shadowed stone staircase by a daring young man disguised monk. The tied and gagged jailer struggles as the young woman makes her get away.

Sir John Everett Millais illustrates this old story with vivid realism, and emotional intensity. Millais' storytelling skills were one of the reasons he was one of the most important British artists of the Victorian era.

Jean-Léon Gérôme 1824-1904, French, King Candaules (Queen Rhodope observed by Gyges) 1859
Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico
King Candaules (Queen Rhodope Observed by Gyges) tells the tale of how King Candaules secretly shows off his wife’s beauty by hiding his guard Gyges in the bedroom to watch the queen undress. Gérôme captures the exact tense moment when Rhodope realizes she is being watched, setting in motion the revenge and murder that follows. Painted in 1859 this painting is famous for its theatrical storytelling, polished realism and its richly detailed historical setting. Gérôme was one of the leading French academic painters of the 19th century, a master of dramatic historical scenes.

What happens next in the story? After Gyges sees the queen naked, Rhodope summons him the next day and gives him a choice, either be executed on the spot or agree to murder the King and marry her. Gyges quickly chose self preservation. Its quite a story with elements of pride, voyeurism, and regicide, exploring the dangers of hubris and the betrayal of trust.

Eugenio Lucas Velázquez 1817-1870, Spanish, Moorish Scene at Sunset 1860, Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico
Moorish Scene at Sunset shows a large group of well dressed figures as they gather at sunset creating a dreamy, romantic vision of Spain’s Islamic past, glowing with warm light, rich color, and a sense of mystery. Eugenio Lucas Velázquez is known for his atmospheric style of Spanish Romanticism. He was an important mid-19th-century artist, bringing freer brushwork and dramatic mood into Spanish painting, influenced especially by the example of Goya.
William-Adolphe Bouguereau 1825-1905, French Far From Home 1868 Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico
William-Adolphe Bouguereau 1825-1905, French
Far From Home 1868
Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico

Far from Home tells the story of two wandering sisters surviving as street musicians in Rome. The older girl clutches her violin while protectively guiding her younger barefoot sister beside her. Their weary expressions suggest they are far from family and on their own. Though poor, Bouguereau presents them with tenderness and dignity.

Bouguereau was a leading figure of the French Academic tradition, admired for his extraordinary technical precision, polished surfaces, and idealized realism. At a time when the Impressionists were beginning to overturn artistic conventions, Bouguereau remained devoted to carefully finished paintings that combined classical beauty with strong emotional storytelling, making him one of the most beloved artists of the Paris Salon.

Ignacio Léon y Escosura 1834-1901, Spanish
The Friends of the Dutchess c1870

The Friends of the Dutchess is a playful scene of aristocratic courtship and vanity. The fashionable dutchess admires herself in a mirror while several elegantly gentlemen gather around, clearly captivated by her beauty. Their gestures and expressions turn the room into a kind of private theater of flirtation. León y Escosura was known for richly detailed scenes of elegant historical interiors filled with nobles, musicians, and fashionable society figures.

Frederic Edwin Church 1826-1900, American , Morning in the Tropics 1872, Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico
In Morning in the Tropics, golden light spreads across calm water, distant mountains, and lush vegetation, creating a scene filled with stillness and awe. Tiny figures along the shoreline appear almost overwhelmed by the grandeur of nature. Church, one of the leading painters of the Hudson River School. He transformed landscapes into vast spiritual experiences that celebrated both natural beauty and the sublime.

William Merritt Chase 1849-1916, American, The Hackensack River c1882, Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico

The Hackensack River is a quiet, atmospheric landscape of a New Jersey river scene where Chase focuses less on drama and more on mood, light, and the subtle color shifts of water and sky. William Merritt Chase stands as one of the key figures in late 19th-century American art: a leading painter and highly influential teacher who helped bring European-trained technique into an American context. He championed plein-air and impressionist approaches, and shaped a generation of artists through his New York school.

James Tissot 1836-1902, French

In the Louvre shows elegantly dressed Parisians moving through the Louvre not because of their deep interest in art, but because they wanted to be seen, using the museum as an elegant social stage. Tissot created sumptuous paintings of Victorian high society and the Parisian Belle Epoque. Edgar Degas invited Tissot to exhibit with the Impressionists in 1874, but at the time, Tissot felt he was doing very well in London and diplomatically declined Degas' invitation.

John Singer Sargent 1856-1925, American
Sleeping Girl c1890
Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico

Rather than presenting a formal portrait, Sargent's Sleeping Girl captures a fleeting private moment: a young girl asleep in quiet stillness. The painting feels effortless, yet every brushstroke is carefully controlled. Light, fabric, and flesh dissolve into soft passages of color, revealing the extraordinary technical confidence that made Sargent one of the greatest portrait painters of his era.

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida 1863-1923, Bacchante (Female Nude from the Back) 1886, Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico
Bacchante was painted when Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida was still a young artist trying to find his own style. The painting feels like a bridge between old Spain and modern painting. The reclining nude, shown from behind, recalls the sensual elegance of Velázquez, but Sorolla’s loose brushwork and glowing flesh tones already hint at the bright, lively style that would later make him famous. Although still grounded in academic tradition, this painting shows him beginning to chase the light, color, and spontaneity that would eventually turn him into one of Spain’s greatest Impressionist-influenced painters and earn him the nickname “the painter of light.”

Lord Frederic Leighton 1830-1896, British, Flaming June c1895, In the Louvre 1883-85, Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico
Flaming June is a true showstopper! This sleeping nude beauty is draped in blazing transparent orange. She glows with Mediterranean light. Painted in 1895, the work is all about beauty, mood, and sensual color, embodying the Victorian ideal of “art for art’s sake.” After years of being forgotten, the painting was rediscovered by the Museo de Arte de Ponce, where it became the museum’s signature masterpiece. Leighton himself was one of the leading figures of Victorian British art, blending classical elegance with the rich color and romance.

Juan Narciso Ríos 1850-1919, Puerto Rican, Guánica Sugar Mill c1900-1919, Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico
Guánica Sugar Mill captures Puerto Rico at the dawn of industrial modernity, with smokestacks, rail lines, and factory buildings transforming the tropical landscape into a center of sugar production. Ríos focused on the realities of progress and economic change, giving the work an almost documentary quality. A self-taught artist from Ponce, he became an important figure in early Puerto Rican art by recording the island’s landscapes, industries, and rapid modernization during a pivotal moment in its history.
Rafael Tufiño 1922-2008, Puerto Rican, Vita Cola 1961, Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico
Rafael Tufiño 1922-2008, Puerto Rican, Vita Cola 1961, Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico
Vita Cola shows a moment from everyday life in mid-20th-century Puerto Rico. This fragile shack patched together with scraps of wood and a faded soft-drink sign features two barefoot children staring directly out at the viewer. Painted in 1961, this ordinary scene of poverty turns into a quiet social statement about inequality and survival in the rapidly changing neighborhoods around San Juan’s Martín Peña Channel.

Tufiño was one of the leading artists of Puerto Rico’s famed “Generation of the 1950s,” a group that used modern art to explore Puerto Rican identity, culture, and social realities. Through paintings, prints, and posters, he became known for giving dignity and visibility to working-class Puerto Rican life, making Vita Cola both a moving human story and an important chapter in the history of Caribbean art.

Portrait of Don Luis A. Ferré show's one of Puerto Rico's major cultural figures. Irizarry shows him as a man who possesses quiet dignity, possessing wisdom and intelligence. Ferré founded the Museo de Arte de Ponce, and was key to forging Puerto Rico's artistic and cultural life. Beyond his love of the arts, he served as Governor of Puerto Rico and was a philanthropist. Carlos Izirarry is known for his finely crafted portraits combining technical precision with psychological depth, going beyond appearance to reveal personality and inner life.

Museo de Arte de Ponce by Enoc Pérez is a vibrant contemporary tribute to the museum itself, transforming the famous modernist building into both an architectural portrait and a symbol of Puerto Rican cultural identity. Perez is known for paintings and prints of iconic buildings, hotels, and cultural landmarks, often using lush colors and slightly faded surfaces that evoke memory, nostalgia, and the glamour of modernism.

If you wish to sell a painting to us ...

At present, we are acquiring few paintings. We are interested in considering works by Joshua Meador, or exceptional paintings by a few other Historic California artists. We do not do miscellaneous consignments but do represent artist estates. We do not provide appraisal services.

DO NOT CALL AND EXPECT A THOUGHTFUL ANSWER REGARDING YOUR PAINTING (especially, do not leave a voicemail message requiring us to phone you), ... INSTEAD, Please EMAIL US (Art@BodegaBayHeritageGallery.com) along with a high resolution jpeg image of your painting. Include the name of the artist, its title, dimensions and condition. Please include any history or provenance. Rather than responding off the cuff, in a timely fashion we will read your note, do our homework, and write back and let you know if we wish to acquire your painting or we may give you our our ideas on how best to market your painting through other resources.
