"Sisters" is a relatively well-known painting by Arthur Merton Hazard. It is in our personal collection and not for sale. Our gallery has been contacted by a grandson of Arthur Merton Hazard, who identified the woman seated in the pink dress as his paternal grandmother, Murga, accompanied by his great aunt and Murga's sister, Faith.
Given the ages of these two women in the painting, we believe this painting to be from Hazard's early career in Boston, as early as 1890. Somewhere along the line the canvas had been cut down and fit into its current frame, removing the bottom portion. The signature piece had been attached to the back, but when we bought it, could no longer be found.
We were thrilled to hear from Arthur Merton Hazard's grandson and are eager to learn more. He will be sending us further biographical information soon, and we will be posting that information along with some paintings from the family collection soon.
