Our gallery has been contacted by a grandson of Arthur Merton Hazard. He identified the woman seated in the pink dress as his paternal grandmother, Murga, accompanied by his great aunt and Murga's sister, Faith.
Given the ages of these two women in the painting, we believe this painting to be from the Boston years of Hazard's early career, as early as 1890. We purchased this painting in 2005 from a Boston auction house, and they stated the canvas had been cut down. They were supossed to ship the severed signature which had been salvaged at the time, but the signature did not survive the shipping process.
We were thrilled to hear from Arthur Merton Hazard's grandson and are eager to learn more. He will be sending us further biographical information soon, and we will be posting that information along with some paintings from the family collection soon.
