Southern California Impressionists |
|
|
The colorful California hills, eucalyptus trees, poppy-covered hillsides, and increadible light soon made California impressionism a worthy branch of the Impressionism Movement. The thumbnails in this article are linked to the artist page for each artist. From those artist pages, you can click to each of the individual paintings we offer. |

Ruth Manerva Bennett 1899-1960 Oak Grove |
Richard Dey de Ribcowsky, 1880-1936 Rialto Bridge, Venice, Italy, 1917 |
French Impressionism challenged the conventions of traditional art, creating art which reflected the vibrancy and modernity of the world in which they lived. They focused on how light affected color, using color rather than dark lines to define shape. Quick short strokes brought life into paintings, showing subjects and figures as they appeared in a brief moment of time. |
|
American artists, many of whom studied with the French Impressionists, made their way to Southern California. California gave impressionist artists new material. Southern California's coasts, its mountains, its deserts and its people all were new subjects for Impressionist painters. Also, as California's population was growing exponentially, there was a ready market for paintings of California scenes. |
Clyde Forsythe, 1885-1962 River Reflection |
Sam Hyde Harris, 1889-1977 Eucalyptus and Marsh |
|
Arthur Merton Hazard, 1872-1930 Lupines on a California Hillside, 1923 |
Anna Hills, 1882-1930 White Roses 1904 |
In those early days, Los Angeles County along with Orange and Riverside Counties where uncrowded and not yet "ruined by improvements." Smog and crowded freeways had not yet arrived. The graceful hillsides of the San Gabriel Mountains stood out like jewels from the valleys below. Eucalyptus trees, not yet thought of as Australian weeds, were prized by painters for their tall, languid and graceful lines shimmering in heavenly light. People loved paintings of poppies, and many of the early California impressionists were ready and willing to provide them. |
|
Among the early elite of the Southern California Impressionists were Franz Bischoff, Alson Skinner Clark, Jean Mannheim, John Marshall Gamble, Edgar Payne, Granville Redmond, Hanson Puthuff, William Wendt, and George Symons. But they were by no means the only ones. Others artists followed, many who worked in Southern California's burgeoning film industry. Art associations and art schools began in the West. |
Louis Krupp, 1888-1978 Borrego Springs |
