Vincent Van Gogh (1853 - 1890) Paintings we have seen ... by Daniel Rohlfing |
Our video based on this article about Vincent Van Gogh paintings (4:50) |
|
|
Yet 130 years after his death, there is no artist more widely known and widely loved worldwide. His paintings and images are everywhere, and even people who know nothing of art know of Vincent Van Gogh. |
Starry Night Paintings
Cafe Terrace at Night, September 16, 1888, Vincent Van Gogh Kroller-Muller Museum, Otterlo, Netherlands (We've not yet seen this one, but hope to soon.) |
Perhaps the most loved Van Gogh paintings are his three paintings of the starry night. |
Starry Night over the Rhone, 1888, Vincent Van Gogh, Musee d'Orsay, Paris |
|
Starry Night, 1889, Vincent Van Gogh, Museum of Modern Art, New York |
|
Self Portraits | |
Self Portrait, 1887, Vincent Van Gogh, Art Institute of Chicago |
Self Portrait, 1889, Vincent Van Gogh, Musee d'Orsay, Paris |
Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear, 1889, Vincent Van Gogh, Courtauld Gallery, London |
|
Portraits of others | |
Portrait of the Artist's Mother, 1888, Vincent Van Gogh, Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena |
Head of a Peasant Woman, 1885, Vincent Van Gogh, (This peasant girl is also pictured in Vincent's painting, The Potato Eaters. In 1885, Vincent was still in Holland painting in dark sombre tones.) National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh |
Portraits of Others ... Vincent painted the people he knew, again because he could not afford models. These portraits allow us to see the people in his life as he saw them. They allow us to know Vincent and those in his life more intimately, and how Vincent's community was important to him. |
Portrait of Eugene Boch, Vincent Van Gogh, 1888, (also known as The Poet, with a Starry Night background) Musee d'Orsay, Paris |
Deux Fillettes, 1890, Vincent Van Gogh, Musee d'Orsay, Paris |
|

Portrait of Joseph Roulin, 1889, Vincent Van Gogh (Joseph Roulin was a surrogate big brother for Van Gogh, caring for him in his mental illness and early days at St. Remy's.) Museum of Modern Art, New York |
Portrait of Dr. Paul Gachet, 1890, Vincent Van Gogh (most famous for treating Vincent during his last weeks) Musee d'Orsay, Paris |
L'Arlesienne (the Girl from Arles), 1888, Vincent Van Gogh (Marie Ginoux, the proprietress of the Café de la Gare) Musee d'Orsay, Paris |
Les Roulottes Campment de Bohemiens aux Environs d'Arles, (a band of gypsies near Arles) 1888, Vincent Van Gogh, Musee d'Orsay, Paris |
The Drinkers, Saint-Remy 1890, Vincent Van Gogh (Vincent's homage to a print by Honore Daumier (1808-1879)) Art Institute of Chicago |
Vincent's bed chamber in Arles
The Bed Chamber in Arles ... Vincent painted three versions of his bed chamber in Arles. He wrote his brother Theo that he did not apply rules for accurate perspective and left out shadows so that the resulting image would resemble a Japanese print. The result is a visual poem of the tight small intimate space where Vincent slept and more importantly, the place where he dreamed. |
Bedroom at Arles, October 1888, Vincent Van Gogh (from the collection of the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam) |
The Bedroom Arles, September 1889, Vincent Van Gogh Art Institute of Chicago |

After his time in Arles, Vincent admitted himself to the Saint-Paul de Mausole mental asylum at St. Remy, a little over 20 miles NE of Arles. He admitted himself to the hospital, but may have been guided to that decision by his friend Joseph Roulin. |

Japanese Vase with Roses and Anemones, June, 1890, Vincent Van Gogh, Musee d'Orsay, Paris |
Imperial Fritillaries in a Copper Vase, 1887, Vincent Van Gogh, Musee d'Orsay, Paris |
Still lifes ... Still lifes were not a major focus of Vincent's painting, but they are consistent with his tendency to paint things familiar to him. Lilacs, roses, anemones, Imperial Fritillaries and common fruits were like Vincent himself, common and ordinary, yet exquisitely beautiful. Vincent's still lifes were anything but still. The vibrancy of moving color and shape is as present as it is in his other work. |
|
Lilacs, 1887, Vincent Van Gogh, Santa Barbara Museum of Art |
Grapes, Lemons, Pears and Apples, 1887, Vincent Van Gogh, Art Institute of Chicago |
Paintings yet to see | |
The Potato Eaters, April 1885, Vincent Van Gogh, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam |
Linda and I have seen many Van Gogh paintings, but we've not yet visited the Netherlands, home of the greatest number of Van Gogh paintings. We look forward to seeing the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo. |
According to myth, Wheatfield with Crows was Vincent's last painting. The stormy dark sky, the crows and the dead-end path were believed to be Vincent's way of depicting the approaching end of his life. But, in fact, he created several paintings after this one. He did want the wheatfield under stormy skies to represent sadness and extreme loneliness. |
